*SPOILER WARNING* Who poisoned Joeffrey?

Did Martin ever reveal the truth about Joeffrey's assasination? Tyrion was accused as were a pair of dwarf entertainers, but who was really behind the poisoning?

The only two characters who I think were truly capable of that kind of underhanded manuevering would be Varys and Littlefinger. I don't think Littlefinger cared one way or the other for Joeffrey but Varys did seem concerned for the well being of the realm, and the realm could ill afford another mad king.

Re: *SPOILER WARNING* Who poisoned Joeffrey?

Littlefinger admitted planning it to Sansa, implying that it was Olenna Redwyne (Margaery's grandmother) who poisoned Joffrey and the only possible witness, Ser Dontos, was killed by Littlefinger after delivering Sansa to him.

The Olenna Redwyne thing isn't outright said but it's the conclusion Sansa reaches and Littlefinger never denies it. This IS the master of manipulation we're talking about here, though, so anything is possible.

Varys, I'm not so sure even knows what's good for the realm. Would Kevan have been so bad? Or Tommen? Tommen might not have been the prototypical strong king but he was surely a better choice than his brother, he was still very young, so who knows what kind of man he may have turned into. I don't understand how he thinks the realm is in peril from anything other than the war Varys himself is orchestrating by helping the Pentoshi (forget his name) bring a Targaryen army back to Westeros. Hell, the realm wasn't even that bad under Robert, so why bother murdering Jon Arryn? Varys was even plotting to kill Ned Stark ("if one hand can die, why not another" paraphrasing, here) with the Pentoshi. Two assassinations that would surely throw the realm into turmoil. I'm not so sure that Varys is at all concerned about the well being of the nation.

Re: *SPOILER WARNING* Who poisoned Joeffrey?

Olenna is the assumed murderer on the book (By Sansa and Pycell, if I recall properly), as she possesed that necklace made of the substance that poisoned Joffrey, the Strangler. That might be a common assumption, but all the evidence seems to point that way. It is unclear who took a pearl from the necklace and poisoned Joffrey's drink, who was the instrument of the crime. I'd have to re-read the scene, but probably it was Margaery herself, being so close to the King and knowing his nature.

Margaery I never thought of, but that's a good point. Nobody had as good an opportunity to slip it in his drink than she did.

Re: *SPOILER WARNING* Who poisoned Joeffrey?

Not to sound whiney but not all of us have finished reading the books... I was just casually browsing around the forums for news on the server and I ran into what I assume is a huge spoiler... Might want to edit the thread's title or at least put a warning next to it to avoid ruining the experience for others.

Thanks. smile

To the dungeons with you!

j/k. It's a valid point particularly since the HBO series is still running. Updating title.

Well, the title itself spoils some stuff, doesn't it? Guess it can't be avoided.
