The Free Cities

World of Westeros - Geography
Monday, 28 July 2008 12:18

The Free Cities are a geographic and cultural region composed of nine city-states that lie east of the land of Westeros across the Narrow Sea on the western side of a massive and unnamed continent. There are significant differences between the geography of the various cities, from the thick forests between Norvos and Qohor, to the rolling hills of Pentos, to the tiny islands of Braavos.

The nine city-states are...

  • Braavos
  • Lys
  • Qohor
  • Norvos
  • Pentos
  • Myr
  • Tyrosh
  • Volantis
  • Lorath

The Nine Free Cities were founded as colonies of the Freehold of Valyria, long before the Doom. Some are thousands of years old, and have diverged over time, each developing its own culture, government, and language. This process was accelerated when Valyria was destroyed 400 years ago. Braavos is the youngest of the Free Cities, and Volantis the oldest.

The Nine Free Cities are a wild crossroads between Westeros and the kingdoms to the East. All manner of men and women can be found in the Free Cities, including mercenaries, water dancers, merchant lords, and followers of the Lord of Light. Mountains to the east separate the coast from the plains of the Dothraki Sea, though gaps in the mountain range provide the Dothraki people some access to the Free Cities. To the north are the Shivering Sea and Ibben, an island inhabited by sealskin-clad whalers. To the south are Slaver's Bay and a series of straits leading to the Jade Sea in the far east.

Regional Benefits

All characters from the Free Cities gain the following benefits:

  • Favoured Skill: Bluff
  • +2 on Diplomacy and Knowledge: Foreign Culture checks. The people of the Free Cities are some of the most cosmopolitan in the world, easily moving between cultures and dealing with foreigners.
  • +1 bonus on all Will Saves. Citizens of the Free Cities see many strange and wonderful things, and are thus less impressed by tricks or chicanery.

Characters from the Free Cities have the option of choosing from the following Feats as one of their Background Feats: Gold Breeder or Keen Mind.

NOTE: Most if not all of the peoples of the Free Cities speak a corrupted form of Valyrian, modified by cultural dialect and regional accent.
