Personally, I think the Aegon plotline is very Bush league for this series. It's the sort of thing I would expect from a lesser writer, like Robert Jordan. Dropping in a character of this significance in the 4th book of the series (no lead in, not foreshadowing) just strikes me as something you do when you're running out of ideas or horribly stuck with the current plots. Very, very lame.
